Leo Vasquez, the Harris County Tax Assessor Collector, was another person who lost in the Republican primary to an Anglo with no name recognition and who did minimal campaigning. He compared his situation to Victor Carrillo but I have to take issue with that. To begin with Vasquez had already upset the more conservative fringe of his party by settling a lawsuit with Democrats over voter registration. Come on Leo, you knew they would expect you to fight against a Democrat no matter what it was the Democrat wanted. If a Democrat stood on one side of an issue you would be expected to stand on the other side, period, no compromise, no thinking, no being rational.
But you’re biggest issue was your partner. Leo, the Republicans consider themselves conservative. At one time that used to apply to fiscal aspects, then it became fiscal and social, now it’s just social. If you wanted to be a Republican you should have understood where that party stood a whole lot better than what you did. How could you think that it would be accepted when it became common knowledge that you live with a married woman? To be quite honest I doubt Democrats would have been real thrilled about you running on their ticket either.
Claiming that you were discriminated against because of your ethnicity is a disservice to people like Victor Carrillo. That’s not to say there was not any discrimination but there was justified reason to vote against you. You may not agree but at least you must know that there are plenty of people who would find your situation objectionable. It’s their right to find it unacceptable just as much as it is your right to find it acceptable. So maybe you made a mistake out of anger, frustration, disappointment, whatever. It happens.
Your next move was to release a statement rebutting your original claim. Now you say, “I have never in my life directly felt the effects of racial bias, nor have I ever accused anyone of exhibiting prejudice against me due to my Hispanic heritage”. Wow! Where can I get one of those bubbles you’ve lived in all your life? Give it up, Leo. The Republicans will never forgive or forget what you’ve already said and no amount of groveling or pretending that prejudice is just a myth will change that. You’re only making the multitudes of Hispanics who have dealt with prejudice angry and disgusted with you. At this rate you won’t have anywhere left to go.
