I saw the story of the Dr. Garcia and the Longoria affair on, I think it was the History channel, and I was mesmerized by it as I had never heard of the doctor or Felix Langoria before. This should be in all the history books but of course it's not. I'm African American and I see so many similarities and parallels with our fight for equality and Mexican Americans' fight. It's seems this country can only handle one spotlighted minority group at a time. Back in Dr. Garcia's time and up until recently it was African American's plight that got the most media play. Now of course with Mexican Americans becoming the largest minority group the spotlight has shifted. That's ridiculous of course as all racism should be exposed by the media no matter what community suffers from it. And African Americans and Mexican Americans should work more closely together to fight our very similar battles for equality. Please comment.

You're right. She is an extremely racist writer, and so is her husband Jonathan. I never buy their books anymore. I wonder why she has such issues with Latinos? What did we do to her? I know that Mexico took in a lot of her people during WWII when they escaped from Europe.

Many years from now, when Hispanics have taken their rightful place as leaders in THIS country, we will thank people like Dr. Bertroche for waking us from our slumber and helping us realize what we really are in the eyes of people like him and his party. At least he is not lying about how much he "esteems his Hispanic brothers". He hates us, wish us out of "his" America, or microchipped and controlled, like his dog. Now that we know this, and that no amount of brown nosing will ever make us equals in their eyes, can we please STOP kissing American ass and stand together at the polls for those people who do have the courage to stand with us?

(THIS THING JUST TAKES OFF) , continued. from above. We must show an original certified birth certificate to even renew our driver's license. We cannot offer even mental health or any other aid if people cannot come up with papers of some kind that at least LOOK legal. And as for the Mexicans/Guatemalans/Salvadorenians and other Hispanics working here, they are working themselves to their literal death in the most dangerous, filthy and unwanted jobs that can be found. They work with false social security cards that pay the money they make into SOME AMERICAN'S retirement account, because they will never see a penny of it. Taxes are taken our of their paychecks THAT THEY NEVER GET BACK because they can't legally claim them. The local farmer owners drive around in Lexus and live in mansions and pile their workers into mobile homes a dog wouldn't live in and CHARGE THEM RENT!!! But don't be fooled by their mild mannered exteriors. This is a sleeping giant and when it is properly stirred, there will be hell to pay. Understand, these people have access to your homes, they are your nannies, housekeepers, gardners, trash collectors, roofers, agricultural workers. Without their cheap labor, your world will turn into a little piece of hell because I can flat out guarantee you will NEVER get Americans to do such horrible work for such low pay. Yes, in that I agree with you. I wish all Hispanics would take a few months off and go home. America would come to it's knees then for sure.

Permalink, what are you smoking? What makes you think Hispanics are not standing on their feet? It's only because the REST of their countrymen are STANDING ON THEIR BACKS to make obscene profits that they appear to be on their knees. You are right in that NO Hispanic-American, as you like to call them, with any policital aspirations has deemed it politically savvy to take up the banner of Hispanic equality in this TOTALLY anti-Hispanic American environment. As for the "many illegals" collecting government aid in Arizona, I don't know how that happens because in Florida, you have to show so much proof of legality that it is even impossible for citizens born here to get a driver's license withough an ORIGINAL OFFICIAL

My nieces and nephews live in Texas. Some were born there, of other Texans, of other Texans who were originally Mexicans. They have black hair, brown skin and dark eyes, but they speak perfect English and no Spanish, as good Texans do. They insult each other's "latinoness" with their little anglo or black friends, who laugh even louder. All their negative traits, laziness, lack of incentive, inability to get a job, are blamed on their "latino" ancestry, yet they will proudly tell you they are not Mexicans, they are Texans! They speak with the same disdain about those, "filthy, thieving illegals" and join in the trashing of people who speak with accents. They are so rejected in the anglo world that they have taken on the black identity, playing their music, talking their slang and wearing their styles, as so many young Chicanos do. The message here is, it is better to be a black wannabe then a Hispanic. I see this in New York, with the Puerto Ricans and Dominicans. They don't realize they have clung to the black identity because the whites wont' let them in. They convince themselves that they are hipper, cooler, whatever, for adapting this false identity. What is the danger here? With the recent rash of beatings and killings of Latinos, just for looking Latino and being one of the "it's hip to hate them" crowd, it may be safer for young Latinos to emulate Americans, any Americans, but in doing so, they must take up the same hateful attitude that their non-Hispanic community puts forth, therby actually hating themselves, their parents and all their ancestry. And what does this do their self esteem? The same thing the Republicans just did to Carillo. Remind him that after all his education, experience and cowtowing to their total disenfranchisement of his people, he was just another "spick". Lesson learned? Not yet. But when the final tally is taken, and the Republican-White wannabees find themselves out in the cold with the rest of us, maybe then. Fairy tales are hard to let go of, especially when you have abandoned all of your own reality. Good for the Texans. Maybe when they really come out of the closet and show their true colors, Hispanics will understand where they really stand and get off their knees.

I am ever mystified when I see people turn on their own kind to gain favor with the ruling class. This type of "Uncle Tom" idiocy has gone on forever as frightened little rats turn to their oppressors and say, "Oh, those othere rats are so bad. But look at me, I'm just like you! I eat like you, talk like you, dress like you and hate the other rats just like you, so I'm ok, eh master". At which point, the master pats the little rat on the head and says, "of course you are Pedro, er Pablo, er what was your name again, oh yeah, PETER! (heh, heh). (To his neighbor), "Who let this rat in here anyway? Get rid of him!" Then the little rat is given some lame excuse why he has to leave and laughter follows his retreat. Such is the fate of those who would turn their backs on their people in the hope of being seen as an equals by their non-Hispanic neighbors and co-workers. Surely your education, your family's generations of people in this country, your fair skin will save you from their fate, no? Just wait, my little rats. When they are rounding up the brown skinned people to microchip them, lock them up until they can prove their citizenship, rough them up or outright beat them for "taking our jobs, money, education, whatever.." you will not be overlooked. Think how ridiculous you will sound screaming, "But I'm one of you! I voted Republican! I hate illegal immigrants too!" Who will defend you when your children are attacked and insulted in the streets because of the color of their hair, eyes, skin? Why do you think the Jews stick together, the Chinese, the Vietnamese? Why do you think people of the same race, culture, religion have banded together throughtout history? The resounding slap in the face that the Republicans gave Hispanics in this last vote, the racist rhetoric of the Tea Party, the Ghestappo mutterings of white supremacists hiding behind thinly disguised hate does not make you think? ANY Hispanic joining the ranks of these obvious haters is only reenforcing his own self loathing. Now is the time for Hispanics of all countries to stand together for the basic human rights that ALL people deserve, not turn against each other like dogs under the table for the scraps thrown at us in appeasement. We can sort out the details of our victory after the battle and make sensible, logical and humane decisions. But a house divided against itself will never stand, and there are many who would divide us to keep us out of power. For the first time in American history, we are the number one MINORITY. Let's make our voices count as ONE and take our rightful stand in the decision making of the country we have take for our own.

Patricia,
I appreciate you getting this "untold story" out. We already have Ken Burns omitting our history in his documentary and special thanks to the Texas State Board of Education for also hiding our stories, like the Longoria Case in Three Rivers. We can also add Mr. Richard Hudson, a "historian" that is trying to distort all the evidence and facts of the Longoria case to make it seem that no discrimination took place in the arrangements for Pvt. Longoria's chapel service. It's a travesty that we can't detail our history, culture and heritage to our youth when you have people and organizations I have mentioned earlier trying to sweep it under a rug. No more! We will tell our stories and will expose the truth!

Patricia,

Who are the leaders of the Hispanic People? Is there a Martin Luther King among them? Someone needs to help lead these people (American & others) to stand on their feet and take hold of "their country" America!
You don't need to be hispanic to see that we have moved back to the days of the Middle Ages. I think someone needs to lead these people out of the Dark Ages and show them the power that they possess if they start acting as a united political group. If all the Hispanics went on strike for ONE WEEK think of the massive breakdown it would cause.
If they do not want to be Mexican Americans then I would agree, they need to home. I know many illegals that live off the State of Arizona, the Federal Gov't mandates that the States must provide "free" housing. We have taught them to survive by taking advantage of "the American System".
I wish someone would teach them to hold their heads high and be proud of being an American Hispanic!!! The majority ARE American Citizens, but like the Blacks were, they have been broken-down and there seems to be no one that wants to lead them.
I know little about politics but I grew up in the 60's & 70's and remember the riots. The time is right for a Hispanic Movement!!
